Physical Punctuation (CaD Ezk 6) Wayfarer

One of the things that I was taught when I was studying acting was the importance of observing people in almost everything they do. The way people walk, for instance; Their gate, stride, and how they carry their body in the simple act of walking. In high school, I had a split period over the lunch hour. I and my buddies often found ourselves standing outside Mrs. Zembles’ classroom after lunch waiting for her to return to unlock the classroom door. To pass the time, I would do walking impersonations for my friends. I would watch someone walk by in the hallway, then I would mimic the way they walked and my friends found it hilarious. Little idiosyncratic things like a unique walk or a repetitive gesture are the types of things that make a character more real on stage. Actors like Daniel Day-Lewis are masters of this.

Because I was trained to observe people, I find that I still notice little things about people. Wendy, for instance, has an unconscious habit of physically punctuating what she’s saying by slapping her hand on her thigh or the table if we happen to be sitting at one. I find it endearing. She is such a passionate person that even in normal conversation her body unconsciously emphasizes her words with physical punctuation.

The same device is used in public speaking or preaching. If I really want to emphasize my words and let my listeners know how strongly I feel about it, my hand will pound the pulpit with each and every word.

In today’s chapter, God gives Ezekiel a message to share with “the mountains of Israel.” His first message was specifically about Jerusalem. Now he turns to mountains to prophesy against their idolatry.

The prophets often railed against the “high places,” and it’s worth a little historical background. After their Exodus from Egypt and wandering in the wilderness, the Hebrews entered the Promised Land and settled there. The traveling tent temple called the Tabernacle, was parked and for a time the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant that went inside it were separated. Until Solomon built the Temple hundreds of years later, there wasn’t a strong central place of worship.

The culture of that day was to have altars built at the top of hills and mountains. So, with no strong central place of worship, the Hebrews built small, personal altars on the top of mountains and hills on which to offer sacrifices. Some became more central places of worship for Hebrews in certain regions and it was accepted given their current circumstances.

But, of course, all of the pagan religions had their altars and centers of worship on the “high places” as well, and over time the Hebrews would mingle or outright mix their religious beliefs and practices. That became a problem, especially when some of these Canaanite religions included sexually immoral acts and even child sacrifice in their practices. It should also be noted that the same thing happened in Solomon’s temple. Instead of being an exclusive temple for the worship of Yahweh, different kings would have pagan altars and worship centers moved into the Temple until it became a carnival of worship for a plethora of different deities. God, whose #1 and #2 commands on His Top Ten list were not to worship other gods or make/worship a graven image, wasn’t pleased.

I found it interesting that as God gives His message to Ezekiel, he also coaches the prophet to “Strike your hands together and stamp your feet.” Punctuate the words, Wendy-like. Pound the pulpit. Emphasize the words you’re saying with a physical action to let your listeners know how passionately you feel about this and how important your message is.

In the quiet this morning, I simply find myself reminded of the words of the Sage of Ecclesiastes: There is a time for everything under the sun. There is a time for soft messages delivered gently, and there is a time for urgent messages emphatically delivered and physically punctuated. Wisdom is knowing the difference. Discernment is acting on it in both delivery and receipt.

Clamoring

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: You have been more unruly than the nations around you and have not followed my decrees or kept my laws. You have not even conformed to the standards of the nations around you.”

One of the more interesting things that I have observed in my lifetime is the increasing extent to which individuals and groups are given and driven to sow anarchy and chaos. It seems that wherever and whenever protesting crowds descend into rioting, violence, looting, and burning, there is always an element participating that cares nothing about whatever cause started with the protests. This element is there to encourage the crowd’s descent into chaos.

Fascinating.

In today’s chapter, God continues to describe to the young prophet Ezekiel his first prophetic assignment. What started out as strange just gets seemingly more strange as God tells Ezekiel that when the 430 days of his metaphorical siege on his little model city of Jerusalem is over, he is to cut off his hair and beard. A third of it is for burning the model city of Jerusalem, a third for striking with a sword around the model of Jerusalem, and a third for scattering a third of it to the wind.

For the people of Ezekiel’s day, the metaphors were much more clear than they are for modern readers. Hair in Mesopotamian cultures was often considered part of a person’s essence, and for this reason, hair was often used in religious rituals and divination practices. The prophet’s hair was God’s metaphorical essence that was in His people. The end of the siege of Jerusalem would end up with God’s people being burned inside the city, slaughtered if they tried to flee, and scattered in exile.

As God explains the judgment against His people, He states that they have been more “unruly” than the nations around them. The Hebrew word hāman has an expansive meaning that includes descriptors such as turbulence, rage, and clamor. This is where it gets really interesting.

Remember that Ezekiel is among the exiles in Babylon. In ancient Babylonian literature, a similar word translated as “clamor” is repeatedly used to describe the increasing and never-ending wickedness that draws the wrath and judgment of their gods. This includes the Babylonian version of the Great Flood story. The Hebrews would know well these words from Genesis 6 that led to the flood:

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

Through Ezekiel, God is telling the Hebrews living in Babylon that their unruly “clamor” is like the same “clamor” that caused God to bring the Great Flood (according to both the Hebrew and Babylonian versions of the story) is what will bring the destruction of Jerusalem if they refuse to repent. Not only that, but their “clamor” was greater than “the nations around them” which included their Babylonian captors.

In mixing metaphors from both Hebrew and Babylonian traditions, Ezekiel is telling his people: “Even our evil Babylonian captors get it better than we do!” This was a stinging rebuke, a desperate warning, and an urgent plea to His people to repent.

In the quiet this morning, my head and heart go back to how I see this “clamoring spirit” alive and well in today’s world. As I meditated on it in the quiet this morning, I came to the conclusion that it is always present in this fallen world. The only thing that changes is the amount and intensity which has ebbed and flowed throughout history. What a contrast to the fruit of the Spirit that Jesus asked His followers to sow in this fallen world to bring redemption, reconciliation, righteousness, and peace which will lead towards increasing order.

I find this a simple litmus test for my life and the human systems which I influence. If my life repeatedly results in me amidst chaos and disorder, then I need to take a long introspective look in the mirror. As a disciple of Jesus, I should find myself with a growing and increasing sense of peace in any and all circumstances. If not, then I’ve missed something important along the way.

Unorthodox Message

“Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it. Then take an iron pan, place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign to the people of Israel.”

As I have mentioned before, I spent a handful of years mentoring individuals within my local gathering of Jesus’ followers in the art of preaching. It was a great experience, and I continue to believe that perhaps I learned more over that stretch of time than my protégés.

As I think back to those years and try to remember the messages of the people I coached, there is one thing that makes many of them stand out in my memory: unusual visual lessons. I remember one message using a full-sized rowboat on stage. Another message was delivered while walking on a treadmill. One of my favorites was the individual who came out portraying Mr. Rogers, singing the theme song, switching from suit coat to sweater, and changing from dress shoes to sneakers. Not only were these things attention grabbers, but the metaphors they presented visually with a boat, a treadmill, and Mr. Rogers helped to remember the message they were trying to get across.

In today’s chapter, God assigns the young prophet Ezekiel his first prophetic message to the people of Israel already living in Babylon. In modern terms, it was like God saying, “Grab some Legos from the kids’ room, a skillet from your kitchen, some bungee chords you have in your garage, and the ingredients for making bread from your pantry. Oh, and grab a bottle of water, too.”

God had Zeke create a model of the City of Jerusalem as if it was under siege, then put the skillet between the City and himself as he tied himself up with ropes, lay on his side, and made bread for lunch using a dried cow pie as fuel along with rationed sips of water at regular intervals. Oh, and he was to repeat this little performance art piece every day for 430 days.

The scene, of course, was a message in and of itself. I always say that God’s base language is metaphor. Zeke’s daily performance art symbolized what God was about to do, allowing His people in Jerusalem to suffer a long and bitter siege by the Babylonians because they refused to listen, repent, and turn their hearts back to God even after years of His prophets like Jeremiah warning them of the bitter consequences if they refuse. Zeke’s Lego and bungee chord performance art not only gave his people a memorable visual, but it drew attention, created conversation, and the daily repetition for over a year ensured that it would stick in people’s heads, even if they refused to let it penetrate their hearts.

As I sit in the quiet and meditate on Ezekiel’s first prophetic message, I have to believe he was more than a little taken aback by the assignment. I have found human beings to be stringent in our herd mentalities. We want to be normal, socially acceptable, and not make waves. We don’t want to stand out or be labeled as strange. If Zeke was like the average human being, he would have initially balked at what God was asking Him to do, and indeed he does push back at God when the original instructions were for him to use human excrement as his fuel for baking bread every day, which is exactly the type of extreme measures that human beings stuck in a city under siege had to resort to to stay alive. God wasn’t pulling any punches with Zeke’s metaphorical message.

Of course, Zeke did obey, and I can only imagine the negative reactions he had to endure. How courageous he was in his obedience.

And, what lengths God was willing to go to get His message across to His people. He broke convention, grabbed attention, and gave memorable visuals that were hard to ignore. Zeke’s audience in Babylon had already experienced phase one of what God had been proclaiming through the prophets for decades. Having endured a 900-mile exile march and now living in a strange land, I would tend to think they might be more open to Zeke’s unorthodox warning.

I’m reminded this morning that sometimes I need to be more unorthodox when delivering a message, and more open-hearted when receiving one.

The other day, The Babylon Bee posted one of its usual satirical memes that pictured a man with children on his lap reading. The headline said, “Man Sits Down With Children To Read ‘The Hobbit’ for Nightly Devotions.” I sent it to our family chat string with the comment “I’m not sure what’s satirical about this.”

I read both The Hobbit and the entirety of The Lord of the Rings to our girls when they were young. They were preteens when the epic Peter Jackson film adaptations began being released, so they grew up watching those with me, too. It’s a thing in our family.

A few years ago I received a strange text in the middle of the day from Taylor asking the name of the character King Theoden’s horse. “That’s random,” I thought as I immediately replied with the answer: Snowmane. Turns out she was at a Pub Trivia night in a pub in the UK and knew that I’d know the answer. For the record, I could have named most of the other character’s horses, as well.

There’s a difference between reading a book and digesting it.

That’s exactly the metaphorical point of today’s chapter. We’re in the final of three chapters describing Ezekiel’s vision of being ushered into God’s Throne room and called to be a prophet to the people of Israel exiled in Babylon. Zeke is handed a scroll with God’s message of “lament, warning, and woe.” In today’s final chapter describing the vision, Ezekiel is told to “eat” the scroll. He does so and finds it sweet as honey.

There’s a difference between reading a scroll and eating it.

Throughout the Great Story, God tells His people to devour His Words. Not just to read them, but to feed on them spiritually; To digest them as they meditate on them day and night. Like the old PSA I grew up with on television stated: “You are what you eat.” That is not only true physically, but also metaphorically. Spiritually we become whatever our mind and spirit feast upon daily.

This chapter-a-day habit is, for me, a spiritual breakfast that gives me a good spiritual start to my day. Just like the blueberry-spinach smoothie Wendy will make for me an hour from now, that does the same thing for me physically. Just as that will not be the only thing I eat today, this chapter-a-day rumination is the only time I spend reading, studying, meditating, or memorizing.

Having devoured the text for over forty years, I have a few observations regarding why God would ask His people to do so:

First, everything in life begins to relate to the Word. Having devoured it and digested it, I begin to find that my heart and mind translate everyday events, conversations, and interactions through the spiritual lens of the Great Story. I can’t help it. It just does.

Second, there are important verses and passages that I have on instant recall just like the name of King Theoden’s horse. The difference, of course, is that life isn’t always trivial. In moments of fear, stress, anger, temptation, conflict, or tragedy I have instant recall of God’s words to instruct, inspire, guide, and comfort. And, it not only works for me intrapersonally but also for others interpersonally as I’m conversing with them.

Third, the deeper I get in my reading, meditating, and memorizing the more deeper, more rich, and more fulfilling it becomes to me spiritually. There’s always more for me to learn, understand, and connect to as I return to it. It humbles me how much I know that I still don’t know after a lifetime of study, but it excites me to keep going back to dig deeper knowing that it will continue to yield even sweeter fruit in my life.

In the quiet this morning, I’m reminded why I’ve developed this chapter-a-day habit and why I continue to do it. I’m grateful for the experience that digesting the Great Story has been for me and my life. And, I recommend it. It’s never too late to start, and I guarantee it yields positive spiritual results.

Faithful God

Faithful God (CaD Ezk 2) Wayfarer

The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’

Earlier this week I wrote about my work experiences when I was young. The thoughts around that post have continued to rattle around in my thoughts this week. I thought of Mike Rowe and his show Dirty Jobs. The dirtiest job I ever had was pollinating seed corn fields. It was hot and the corn would cut and scrape my arms and legs. By the end of the day, I would be drenched with sweat and I would be yellow from head to foot covered in corn pollen. It was nasty work but it paid well, and it taught me that Ag science was not a field I was particularly interested in pursuing.

In today’s chapter, Ezekiel’s vision of being in God’s throne room continues and the young priest is given his prophetic calling. God has a job for Zeke. He is to proclaim God’s messages to the Israelites living in exile in Babylon. God warns Zeke that it is going to be a tough job. The very reason they are in exile is because of their rebelliousness and obstinance toward God. God tells Ezekiel that it’s highly likely they will refuse to listen and that he’s not going to be very popular.

As I read the chapter this morning, I also thought about Jeremiah. In fact, I went back and read the first chapter which describes God’s prophetic call to Jeremiah. Jeremiah and Ezekiel’s prophetic ministries overlap. God called Jeremiah to proclaim His messages to the same obstinate and rebellious people in and around Jerusalem. If Zeke knew Jeremiah at all before being sent in exile to Babylon, he would have an inkling of what he was in for. Jeremiah was threatened, beaten, and thrown into a well. God’s warning to Zeke in today’s chapter might be summed up: “It’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it.”

And, as I meditated on it in the quiet this morning, I realized that was the point. God refuses to give up on His people. They have rejected Him, but He isn’t giving up on them. Whether it was the exiles in Babylon or the people left in Jerusalem, God was determined to continue warning them, continue calling them to repentance, and continue assuring them of the love and hope He has for them if they will simply soften their hearts and choose to follow. Even knowing that most of them will refuse to listen, God refuses to give up on them. I am reminded of Paul’s words to Timothy (another young man tasked with proclaiming God’s Message):

“if we are faithless,
    he remains faithful,
    for he cannot disown himself.”

2 Timothy 2:13 (NIV)

One of the more challenging aspects of parenting (speaking of another tough job but someone’s got to do it) for me has been watching my children (and now grandchildren) navigate their own spiritual journeys. Their dance with the Almighty is their own. I have no control. What I do have is faith in a faithful God who refuses to give up on His own, even if and when they give up on Him. In the meantime, I, like Zeke, will keep proclaiming the Message even if no one listens.

Unexpected

Unexpected (CaD Ezk 1) Wayfarer

In my thirtieth year, in the fourth month on the fifth day, while I was among the exiles by the Kebar River, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

Life wasn’t going as planned for Ezekiel. Born into a priestly family, his road in life was as straight and flat as an Interstate 80 in western Nebraska. He would spend his life studying in preparation for his 30th birthday when he would enter the priesthood and begin his priestly duties in the Temple in Jerusalem.

So much for that.

At the age of 26, the Babylonians laid siege to Jerusalem and young Ezekiel was among those forced to make the long 900-mile march to Babylon where he lives in exile with thousands of his people. His momentous 30th birthday arrives, but everything he’s planned for his entire life is gone. There will be no priestly duties in the Temple, which is almost a thousand miles away. Ezekiel finds himself sitting aimlessly by the Kebar River in Babylon. What’s a priest to do living in a foreign land with no Temple in which to perform his duties?

Then, unexpectedly, God shows up.

Today’s inaugural chapter of Ezekiel records the young priest’s first God-given vision, and boy is it a doozy. As I read it in the quiet this morning, I was reminded of a friend in college who described to me what it was like to drop acid. Ezekiel sees some pretty funky-looking creatures. But when you start thinking about the metaphorical meaning and looking at it in the context of the Great Story, it begins to make a lot of sense.

Ezekiel is not alone in receiving visions of God’s throne room. Isaiah had one. The entirety of John’s Revelation is one long vision in God’s throne room. There are many similarities. The number four represents completeness, so four angelic beings (aka Cherubim) with four sides/faces represent the ability to attend to things from all sides. The animals represented are about God’s glory and strength. The intersecting wheels allow for movement in all four directions and the eyes around the rims allow for seeing everything, from every direction. Together, they represent complete attendance to and service of God. Then there’s the Light, the incomparable power and brightness of the light. The “vault” between the cherubim and the throne is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis to describe God separating the waters above from the waters below. In other words, the throne is elevated above and beyond the creatures. It is holy.

Ezekiel may be a thousand miles from the Temple, but he is given a front-row seat in God’s Throne Room. Like Ezekiel, I have discovered along my own life journey that my plans are not always God’s plan.

Ezekiel’s life and prophecies are built upon the foundational theme of exile. It has been argued that exile is the predominant theme of the Great Story. Humanity is exiled from the Garden at the beginning of Genesis and restored into fellowship with God at the end of Revelation. Jesus left heaven to live, teach, suffer, and die in exile on Earth. Joseph was exiled to Egypt, then the Hebrews were exiled to Egypt, and even Jesus was exiled to Egypt. The Jesus movement spread throughout the Roman world in part because persecution drove the early believers into exile. Exile is everywhere in the Great Story.

And, I find that to be a great theme for my own earthly journey. There are seasons of my life that felt like exile because I, like the Prodigal Son, made choices that put me there. In other cases, there were seasons of life when I found myself in places I never expected to be because of circumstances that were largely out of my control. Just like Ezekiel.

The message of Ezekiel is, however, a hopeful one. Ezekiel may be in exile, but God is right there with him. He may not be a priest in the Temple, but God’s got a job for Zeke as His prophet in exile. I also noted as I meditated on this in the quiet this morning that Zeke is not alone. Right up the Babylonian road is a guy named Daniel along with his friends Shadrach, Meshac, and Abednego. They’re living in the same exile, and God has some big plans for using them, too. Despite his feelings of displacement, confusion, and isolation, Zeke is not alone, and he’s right where God has purposed for him to be to accomplish His will.

When I find myself in unexpected places, God shows up in unexpected ways.

Work as Spiritual Discipline

Work as Spiritual Discipline (CaD 2 Thess 3) Wayfarer

For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.
2 Thessalonians 3:7-9 (NIV)

Growing up, work was an expectation as soon as I was old enough to do so. I had a newspaper route when I was twelve, which was sort of a brilliant way to learn business at that age. Not only did I have to deliver the newspapers, but I also had to collect the money from my customers and fill out a sales ledger each month. At thirteen I was a bus boy at a local restaurant, and then took advantage of the Iowa caucuses to get hired on with a Presidential campaign. I pollinated corn and mowed lawns in the summer. I shoveled driveways in the winter. I was a babysitter. I was a lifeguard. Basically, I did just about anything to make a buck.

A year or so ago, I was giving the message among my local gathering of Jesus’ followers and was explaining that I wasn’t a staff member of the church. I mentioned that I had a “tent-making” operation during the week. I had more than one person who didn’t get the reference and thought my business was manufacturing tents.

“Tent-making” is a metaphor that comes from Paul. He was raised in his family’s tent-making business in Tarsus. Tarsus was a key post for the Roman army in Greece and Paul’s family was likely a supplier to the Roman legions. While we’ll never know for sure, it’s possible that their tent-making service to Rome may have earned his family their Roman citizenship.

While taking Jesus’ Message to the Roman world, Paul continued to make tents. Wherever he traveled he would hang out his shingle and work. In fact, Paul felt passionately about it, which is abundantly clear in today’s chapter. Paul saw work as a form of spiritual discipline. He didn’t want to be dependent on anyone’s gifts, donations, or financial support. He believed that hard work was part of his daily witness to others, and in today’s chapter writes that he has heard reports of individuals who are “idle” among them. He bluntly admonishes the believers in Thessalonica: “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.”

In the quiet this morning, I am whispering prayers of gratitude for growing up in a time when work was a part of both childhood and adolescence. I have been blessed to have had so many different jobs and had such diverse experiences. I learned a lot along the way.

Along my life journey, I have rarely, if ever, heard anyone teach about Paul’s teaching on work as a witness or the trap that living in financial dependence on others can become. I find it an important lesson in the development of personal and spiritual maturity. Paul repeatedly writes that he was a living example with his tent-making. I pray that my life, and my work, is an example as well.

The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie.

On the way home from the lake on Saturday, Wendy and I listened to a podcast interview with a Palestinian man from a small village in the West Bank who is living in fear for his life. He has been largely disowned by his own people, and many want him dead because he dared to send six tweets on October 7th questioning the unspeakable violence and terror that had been unleashed by Hamas. His first tweet simply stated, “What sad and horrible news to wake up to and out of words and unable to digest what’s going on right now. I’m Palestinian and firmly stand against this terror. I pray for the safety of my friends, colleagues, their loved ones, and everyone else affected.”

I found his entire story amazing, and it’s worth a listen no matter where you stand politically on the spectrum. As I listened, I thought to myself that he represents the kind of courage displayed in the iconic photo of the man in Tiananmen Square standing alone in front of a tank. The courage to risk everything to stand against what is evil.

When asked about October 7, he said, “Hamas’s ultimate goal was to incite hatred, create division, and make peace seem impossible.” I couldn’t help but think that this is an apt description of the Evil One’s playbook since he slithered his way through the Garden of Eden.

Today’s chapter is fascinating as Paul tells his Thessalonian disciples that Jesus will not return until “The Man of Lawlessness” is revealed. The fascinating part is that this is the only place in the Great Story where this “Man of Lawlessness” is mentioned, at least by that name. Those who go down the rabbit hole of end times prophesy have all sorts of theories. Have at it.

I don’t have a stake in identifying who this prophetic character is, but I think it’s important to think about what he represents. Like the Evil One, the Man of Lawlessness stands in opposition to God and anything God promotes:

God is love, he sows hatred.
God is life, he sows death.
God is peace, he sows chaos.
God is truth, he “serves the lie.”

As I listened to this humble man’s story, it became clear to me that he is on an incredible spiritual journey. What he knows for sure is that he can no longer stay silent about the hatred, violence, death, and chaos that he’s being told he should embrace and celebrate. Despite a life of incredible struggle in which he has repeatedly experienced discrimination, hatred, and rejection, he chooses to remain hopeful and pursue a personal path of love and peace with others.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself thinking about the current state of our world. There are so many people calling for violence, protests, riots, and chaos. Hatred is not only justified but celebrated and encouraged. Discrimination is deemed acceptable and even encouraged. I personally can’t help but believe that it is the same spirit as the Man of Lawlessness. It all serves the lie.

At the time of Jesus’ ministry, the popular belief among His people was that the Messiah would come and lead an army in a war against Rome. Even after three years following Jesus, His own inner circle of disciples was having trouble letting go of this popular belief that had been drilled into them since they were born. They still couldn’t see that Jesus was establishing a very different kind of Kingdom on earth. His Kingdom is not about using power, violence, and conquest to subject others to His will. Rather it’s about individuals surrendering themselves and using love, kindness, and gracious generosity to make a difference in another life, one person at a time.

Perpetually Growing

Perpetually Growing (CaD 2 Thess 1) Wayfarer

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.
2 Thessalonians 1:3 (NIV)

Wendy and I spent the past week at the lake with the kids and grandkids and good friends of theirs who have a daughter Milo’s age and another baby on the way. Wendy and I had a great time with them and enjoyed playing host. We got home late in the day on Saturday, and yesterday we joined our local gathering of Jesus’ followers, including my father.

It’s a fascinating season of life for me. I’ve been meditating on this a lot in recent days. Our kids are in the throes of parenting young children, being first-time homeowners, building careers, and paying the bills. At the same time, we’re walking with my 87-year-old father who is learning about life without his spouse of 60-plus years, living in a relatively new community, and managing the aches and pains, bumps and bruises, and perpetual medical diagnoses that come with the human body in its inevitable decline.

While at the lake, our daughter asked, “Were you overwhelmed all the time when we were little kids? I don’t remember you seeming overwhelmed.”

I laughed. Oh man, was I overwhelmed.

I shared that story yesterday morning with a young man who was in high school with Taylor and Clayton and is in the same season of life. His father, now retired, was standing there with him. We had a good talk and a few laughs about life’s stresses and being overwhelmed in that season of life. His father then added, “I hate to break it to you, but I sometimes feel just as overwhelmed today!”

And, it’s true. The things that overwhelm us change, but life has its challenges in every season on life’s road.

Today we begin Paul’s second letter to his friends in Thessalonica. It was written shortly after the first letter. It’s shorter than the first, and the themes are relatively the same. He wants to applaud how they are handling continued persecution. He wants to address issues surrounding Jesus’ return, and he wants to give them encouragement.

In today’s opening of the letter, Paul acknowledges that their faith is growing “more and more” and their love for one another is “increasing.” One of the things that struck me about this was reading in the context of a post I wrote last week in which Paul encourages an increase in the Thessalonian believers’ faith and love. They took his encouragement to heart and continued to grow in faith and love.

This takes me back to Taylor’s observation and question about young children being relatively oblivious to their parents’ being overwhelmed. I have found along the life journey that we have certain perceptions of what life will be like down the road that are simply wrong. I used to think that at some point on life’s road, I would feel like I’ve “arrived” and things get easier. They don’t. The challenges simply look different. Along with this misguided sense of “arrival,” I thought that one sort of reaches a pinnacle place of spiritual maturity in which you’ve learned it all. Quite the opposite, the further I push into spiritual maturity the more aware I am of how much further I have to go. As C.S. Lewis put it, there’s always more to reach for “further up, and further in.”

And that’s why I loved Paul’s acknowledgment of the Thessalonian believers’ increase in faith and love. They were fledgling believers, but they were growing and increasingly producing spiritual fruit.

In the quiet this morning I am reminded that this should never end on this earthly journey. As long as I have life and breath I will be pushing further up, and further in toward God’s Kingdom. I will perpetually be letting old things pass away so that new things may come. I will always be spiritually growing, learning, repenting, and increasing in faith and love, even as my body begins and continues the slow decline to physical death.

It is the beginning of another work week. I have a number of things on my task list this week. I have added “Grow in and exhibit more faith and love” to the top of the list. If I’m not increasing in that, accomplishing all of the other tasks is eternally meaningless.
