Community (CaD Lk 1) Wayfarer

“All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.”

The last few nights, Wendy and I have visited one of our local eating establishments. It’s always enjoyable to eat out, but living in a small town makes it a bit different experience. You tend to know people. You not only know people but you tend to know their stories. People stop and have conversation. It’s a communal experience.

I get that small town life isn’t for every one. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Community has become one of the things I have grown to value most on this earthly journey. People walking life’s journey together, sharing experiences and sharing tragedies. I have found there to be a psychological, social, and spiritual strength in being an active part of healthy community.

One of the reasons Wendy and I went out to eat last night is that every Wednesday night we allow our house to be used by four small groups of high schoolers and their youth program. Twenty or thirty kids and their adult leaders invade our home for two hours, while we have a date (see featured photo of our front door on Wednesday evenings). As Wendy and I drove home last night from our very sociable dinner and entered the house filled with a cacophony of teen voices, we were filled once again with gratitude for living in community.

As the holidays approach, I thought I’d go back to Luke’s version of Jesus’ story on our chapter-a-day journey. Luke was a doctor, and he was one of the many believers who became a follower of Jesus based on the witness and stories of those who’d been with Jesus and testified to Jesus’ message, miracles, death, and resurrection. Luke decided to thoroughly investigate all of these stories, interview those who were part of the story, and write them down for his friend Theophilus and other believers back in his own home community. Luke became a companion of Paul on his missionary journeys and documented those experiences, as well.

I love Luke’s version of the story because of the fullness he brings. In his opening chapter, it is Luke who fills in the stories of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, Mary’s account of her angelic visitation and subsequent visit to John the Baptist’s mother, Elizabeth who was a relative. A woman who had been childless suddenly gets pregnant in her old age. Her husband, a respected priest in the community, is struck dumb yet claims an angel appeared to him in the Temple and told him this would happen. Mary arrives to add her own angelic experiences and miraculous conception to an already miraculous story.

I found it interesting when Luke the investigator adds, “All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things.” That’s what happens in a small, close-knit community. Word travels. Stories get shared. People both know and care about other people in their community. Personal events are communally felt. As an investigator and chronicler of these events, Luke is saying that people in that small Judean hill country were still talking about it: Zac and Liz’s miracle boy who became the famous Baptizer. Local boy makes good, then tragically loses his head because of Herod.

Our small town here in Iowa has produced a well-known professional athlete and a rock-star. Everyone in our town knows it. We know their parents and their siblings. People feel a communal connection. They feel part of the story. It was no different for the community in the Judean hill country where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself meditating on living in community. Yes, I’ve known and experienced some of the unhealthy and annoying things that living in a small community of other flawed human beings brings with it. I have, nevertheless, found the positives to far outweigh the negatives. In our post-covid world, I continue to read about the negative consequences created by forced isolation. The psychological affects were felt by everyone from children who couldn’t be with their classmates to elderly individuals who were virtually shut off from any physical contact with their loved ones. It takes a mental and spiritual toll.

I need community. Jesus modeled with his disciples and the entourage of men and women who accompanied Him on His ministry. Luke experienced it as the followers of Jesus in his day met regularly in people’s homes to share meals and share lives. I’m convinced I would find community no matter where I lived. I’d seek it out. I need it for my own mental and spiritual health. But I’m here in a small Iowa town where I’m blessed to have it in abundance.

Today, I’m going to bask in the sheer joy of it.

My Choice

My Choice (CaD Hos 14) Wayfarer

Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.
The ways of the Lord are right;
    the righteous walk in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them

I had a friend who spent time in Russia almost immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union. His visit was part of a educational mission and his team met with groups of educators from the ex-Soviet system. As he explained to me his experiences, he shared a simple recurring story that spoke volumes to him.

My friend had a set of different colored markers. He would hold out his hand with four or five different colors of markers and ask a participant to pick one. He said that his Russian hosts would always freeze-up and stare at him blankly. They refused to make a choice. His interpreter explained to him that under the Soviet system, there are no choices. They had always been given a marker and told which one to use.

Today’s chapter is the ancient prophet Hosea’s swan song message to his people. Despite thirteen chapters of dire warnings and prophetically foreshadowing an impending Assyrian invasion and exile, Hosea has not given up hope. Throughout the course of his messages, Hosea has repeatedly predicted that, even if his people end up suffering in exile, there will be a season of restoration and blessing on the other side. His final message channels this hope, envisioning a restored relationship with God and the blessing that will follow. He then ends his prophetic works with a choice.

Who is wise? Let them realize these things.
    Who is discerning? Let them understand.
The ways of the Lord are right;
    the righteous walk in them,
    but the rebellious stumble in them
.

Choice is a theme throughout the Great Story. Adam and Eve are given a choice to obey God’s command not to eat the forbidden fruit, or not. They chose not.

God said to His people through Moses:
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.

Joshua said to the same people:
“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

The prophet Elijah put it this way:
“How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”

The sage of Proverbs admonishes:
“Choose my instruction instead of silver,
    knowledge rather than choice gold,”

Jesus told His followers:
“Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.”

And James wrote to the followers of Jesus:
“…anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”

In John’s Revelation Jesus described salvation as the simple choice of opening the door of one’s heart:
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

In the quiet this morning, I find myself facing another day on this earthly journey in which I have many choices both large and small. The big choice of following Jesus helps determine all of the little choices of how I will react, respond, relate, think, speak, and act.

I endeavor to choose well over, and over, and over again.

A Satisfying Meal

A Satisfying Meal (CaD Hos 13) Wayfarer

Wendy and I got to celebrate Thanksgiving with our daughter Madison and her husband, Garrett, in South Carolina last week. Madison is pregnant with grandchild #3, a girl, due in late January. It was so much fun to be able to hang out with them and enjoy a family feast together. It was so good.

Thanksgiving is perhaps my favorite holiday in its simplicity, and in the fact that it’s core meaning hasn’t been diluted and profaned by mass commercialization. It’s about having a meal with loved ones and being grateful. When I stop to meditate and truly contemplate all that I have to be thankful for, it’s like a spiritual chiropractic adjustment. It helps my spiritual alignment.

Many, many years ago I was reading through the book of Deuteronomy and stumbled upon a verse that immediately leapt off the page and embedded itself in my soul:

“When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
Deuteronomy 8:10 (NIV)

Anyone who knows Wendy and me, or has followed this blog for any length of time, knows that enjoying a good meal with good people having good conversation is one of our greatest joys in life. At the end of such a meal, Deuteronomy 8:10 almost always rises up my soul, reminding me to en-joy the moment and praise the One who has so richly blessed me with such goodness. It reminds me of what David said in Psalm 16, my boundary stones have fallen in pleasant places.

As we near the end of Hosea’s prophetic messages, there is little mincing of words. God through Hosea indicts the people of Israel for straying so far from the One who had delivered them from slavery in Egypt and allowed them to prosper. He references rule number one of the Top Ten He’d given them: No other gods. Not only had they worshiped other gods, but they’d committed human sacrifices to these idols. Add murder to the idolatry.

What I found fascinating in today’s chapter was God’s observation that amidst God’s goodness and blessing, the people of ancient Israel forgot God. Their affluence, prosperity, and blessing led to them forgetting their entire history and the God who graciously revealed Himself, rescued them from slavery, and blessed them abundantly.

As Wendy and I sit and read the news, I often think to myself that many of our cultural ills are rooted in our affluence. Life becomes very small if and when you’re simply and literally trying to survive each day. When I have far more than I need in every way, especially time, it’s easy for my soul and mind to wander into silly and foolish places. I believe that is the very thing God was reminding the people of ancient Israel, and me, in today’s chapter.

In the quiet this morning, I continue to ride the wave of gratitude that last week prompted when, once again, I ate and was so blessedly satisfied in a multitude of ways.

Short-Cuts

Short-Cuts (CaD Hos 12) Wayfarer

The merchant uses dishonest scales
    and loves to defraud.
Ephraim boasts,
    “I am very rich; I have become wealthy.
With all my wealth they will not find in me
    any iniquity or sin.”

When I was a young man, I was not great with money. I confess this. It took me some hard lessons, both financial and spiritual, along with some time to get things straightened out. It has been one of the most important spiritual lessons of my entire life journey. Part of that hard lesson I learned was that sound financial strategies, much like spiritual maturity, require discipline and longevity. Short-cuts appear tempting, but they make for long delays.

Along that journey, I’ve had a number of living parables present themselves.

I’ve personally known two individuals, both sincere and devout followers of Jesus and men I considered wise, who placed all of their retirement savings in one risky investment and ended up losing everything.

My father, the accountant, has regaled me with stories, repeatedly told, of businesses he discovered were cooking the books and kiting checks. The stories end up with law enforcement, businesses closing, and business owners in big trouble.

Years ago it was recommended to me (once again, by devout followers of Jesus who I considered wise) that we switch to using a broker who was making money hand-over-fist for clients. All the powerful and wealthy were flocking to this firm. Then, I witnessed that firm quickly and suddenly implode. The palatial offices were suddenly closed. Employees were quickly spinning off to create their own companies. Investors stuck in bad investments were livid and litigious. All these years later, I hear the lawsuits are still being settled.

In today’s chapter, the prophet Hosea raises charges against ancient Israel for the corruption and dishonesty that was happening among the wealthy and powerful elites who were packing the administrations of a string of crooked kings. He describes them as sitting atop the societal and governmental food chain working their dishonest schemes and feeling untouchable while the poor and marginalized suffered.

Hosea even uses the metaphor of Jacob to describe these ancient elites. Jacob was their patriarch who deceived his older twin of his birthright and then deceived their father to get the blessing of the first-born. Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, and Hosea makes it clear that the nation of Israel was guilty of their namesake’s deceptive ways.

In the quiet this morning, I am sobered by the trip down memory lane and the number of good people I have known who made foolish choices out of an out-of-control appetite to have greater financial security or to increase their earthly treasure. I’m reminded of Paul’s words to his young protégé Timothy: “godliness with contentment is great gain.” I’m also reminded that Jesus constantly spoke of being wise about what we treasure. He repeatedly spoke of the Kingdom of God as a hidden treasure worth giving up everything to acquire, while He spoke of earthly treasure as the worst investment one can make from a spiritual and eternity perspective.

Where am I susceptible to making foolish choices? What “too good to be true” opportunity would I be foolish enough to consider? Where am I most tempted to take short-cuts in life?

Short-cuts make for long delays.

Love & Punishment

I will not carry out my fierce anger,
    nor will I devastate Ephraim again.
For I am God, and not a man—
    the Holy One among you.
    I will not come against their cities

As a child, I remember noticing patterns in life. There was a certain flow to how things happened. One of these patterns was how my parents exacted punishment. When I was caught doing something bad, my parents anger was aroused. The punishment was carried out, and I was typically remanded to my room to think on both my infraction and the shame of my punishment. A short time later, my parent would come to my bedroom much calmer and full of compassion. Hugs were then doled out as I expressed my remorse. I was given a reminder of their love for me and wanting the best for me.

Jesus used multiple metaphors in His parables to share about God’s Kingdom and how it works. He spoke of a woman tearing apart her house looking for a lost coin. At another time it was a man selling everything he had to acquire a field that held buried treasure. More famously, He used the example of father who graciously, and lovingly welcomes his lost son home.

In the same way, the ancient prophets would use different metaphors to deliver what was. basically the same message. Hosea has repeatedly used the metaphor God gave him of Israel being like a promiscuous and adulterous wife. In today’s chapter, Hosea switches to a completely different metaphor and prefigures Jesus’ parable of the lost and prodigal son. Hosea describes God lovingly delivering his son Israel from slavery in Egypt, teaching the boy to walk, lovingly leading and feeding the lad as he grew into a nation. But the boy foolishly rejected his Father and, like Jesus’ prodigal, will find himself broken and destitute in the “distant land” of Assyria.

Once again, like I experienced with my own parents, Hosea mixes punishment with both grace and hope. Yes, Israel will find itself in captivity and exile. Yes, the boy will suffer the consequences of his hard-hearted rebellion. But, just as I learned that after the punishment and remorse came grace, compassion, and restoration, the boy Israel will return from exile and punishment, the relationship between boy and Father restored.

In the quiet of this morning after Thanksgiving, I find myself grateful for loving parents who modeled God’s love in the way they parented and punished. I hope that my children might say the same as they look back on the example I set as a father. I am also grateful that Jesus ultimately fulfilled Hosea’s prophetic vision of a loving, gracious, and compassionate Father by by coming not to condemn the world, but to graciously save the world.

In a world that is currently tearing itself apart with hate and prejudice, and reeling from the consequences of that vitriol, I pray that I can be a living example of God’s love, grace, and compassion that both Hosea, and Jesus, proclaimed.

Guilt and Grace

Sow righteousness for yourselves,
    reap the fruit of unfailing love,
and break up your unplowed ground;
    for it is time to seek the Lord,
until he comes
    and showers his righteousness on you.
But you have planted wickedness,
    you have reaped evil,
    you have eaten the fruit of deception.
Because you have depended on your own strength
    and on your many warriors

“But you don’t know the things I’ve done,” he said to me.

I had simply told the man that God offers grace and forgiveness if he was simply willing to ask for it. He found it hard to believe.

Along my spiritual journey, I’ve found that people don’t need my condemnation. They know their own faults. They know their guilt. They know the things they’ve done, the pain they’ve caused, and they’ve reaped the bitter consequences of their actions.

What the man needed was the grace and forgiveness that he knew he didn’t deserve. If he was willing to receive it, his entire life might be transformed.

In today’s chapter, Hosea continues to proclaim punishment on ancient Israel for their sin. The pronouncement is not a metaphorical mystery. Hosea states it plainly. Israel will be attacked by the Assyrian Empire, she will be laid to waste, and her people will be carried off into exile. Once again, Hosea clearly states the charges against her: Idolatry, rejection of God, and corruption that made the rich richer while the poor and marginalized were oppressed.

As I have mentioned in previous posts/podcasts, I chose to read through Hosea precisely because his prophecies came directly after Amos, the last book we trekked through on this chapter-a-day journey. If anything, Hosea built upon Amos’ prophetic pronouncements. Amos proclaimed that Israel would be taken into exile. Hosea identifies the Assyrians as the nation that would do so. What I find fascinating about Hosea in contrast to Amos, is the continued offering of hope. While Amos pronounces judgement, defeat, and exile with righteous, hopeless anger, Hosea continues to remind his people to repent, return, and sow the righteous ways God prescribed for them. Hosea comforts them with the hope God will yet “come like the rain” to shower His righteousness upon them.

I find Hosea’s approach more true to the heart of God than that of Amos. The grace within judgement prefigures the criminal crucified next to Jesus. The criminal knew he was getting what he deserved, and he knew that Jesus was suffering for sins he’d never committed. He was willing to admit it, and willing to ask simply for Jesus to remember him, to think of him, when Jesus crossed into eternity. That simple willingness to embrace his own humanity and reach out to Jesus’ divinity released a flood of grace, forgiveness, and salvation.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself once again confessing my own sins and embracing my own guilt. Once again, I reach out for Jesus’ grace and forgiveness, which I don’t deserve, but which He freely showers upon me.

Once again, I pray for those I know who are unwilling to do one or both of those things.

Illusion of Possession

Illusion of Possession (CaD Hos 9) Wayfarer

They will not remain in the Lord’s land;

I was the youngest of four children. I’m grateful to say that we were never in need as children. That said, there wasn’t a lot of extra from an affluence perspective. Early on, I developed a behavioral pattern with both money and things. I developed a possessive attitude towards “my stuff.” I also tended to spend any money I acquired as quickly as possible on things that provided immediate pleasure but had little long-term value.

Over a lifetime as a disciple of Jesus, I’ve gone through major transformation in my thoughts and behaviors towards both money and things. It’s impossible for me to be obedient to Jesus’ teachings and not address matters of money and things. Jesus spoke more about money and treasure than almost anything else.

One of the things that has slowly transformed my thoughts and behaviors is the realization that nothing I have is really mine. The Great Story reveals Jesus as the “Alpha and Omega.” He is the “alpha-point” through whom creation flows. He is the “omega-point” to whom all things return. All that I am blessed to have on this earthly journey is ultimately from the Alpha, and ultimately it will return to the Omega. The question is simply how I will steward those things with which I have been blessed by God to have on loan on this brief earthly sojourn? Will I be generous or miserly? Will I treasure the possession or treasure the people with whom I can bless with it? Will I greedily hoard in the illusion it’s mine, or will I participate with the Alpha in the generous, life-giving flow of all things?

In today’s chapter, the ancient prophet Hosea makes a rather stunning statement about his people: “They will not remain in the Lord’s land.” The Great Story clearly states that the land of Canaan was intended to be given as a blessing to Abraham’s descendants so that “all of the nations of the earth will be blessed.” The source was God. The intention was a life-giving flow of blessing to all nations from a people who understood the source and their place in the flow of the life and blessing. Part of that understanding was that the land was ultimately God’s.

Since the latest war about this land broke out just weeks ago, Wendy and I have been doing a lot of reading and listening regarding both sides’ “claim” to this land. Those claims both reference Abraham. The Jewish people trace their lineage and history in the land back to Abraham through Abraham’s son, Isaac. The Arab muslims trace their lineage and claims to the land back to Abraham through his son, Ishmael (Osama Bin Laden references this belief in his “Letter to America”). I can’t help but mourn the fact that what God meant to be a blessing to all nations continues to be warped by evil, and the evil angels of our nature, into a fratricidal conflict of peoples that has raged for thousands of years.

In some ways, this is not unique. I have witnessed the same types of destructive conflict over family farms here in Iowa. The same deep seeded hatred between siblings. The same lust to possess the land at all cost giving birth to generations of greed, hatred, anger, rage, and even violence. Such toxic and spiritually suicidal thoughts and actions just for the illusion that one can actually possess something that flowed from the Alpha and will flow back to the Omega.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself bringing thoughts of international politics and diplomacy back down to a personal level. There is little I can practically do about the circumstances and situation that continue to rage in the Lord’s land as they have for thousands of years. King David wrote in his lyrics to Psalm 122 to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” I will continue to do so.

What I can do, however, is continue to personally learn and apply the spiritual lessons Jesus continues to teach me. All that I supposedly and physically possess on this earthly journey, including land, is illusory from the eternal perspective of the Kingdom of God. The more I spiritually, emotionally, and physically cling to earthly possessions that will rot or pass on to be possessed by others, the less room there is in my mind, heart, and spirit for the eternal things of God’s Spirit.

The further I get in my spiritual journey, the more I embrace the spiritual reality that “my stuff” is actually all “God’s stuff.” I don’t possess things but rather steward blessings. I’m not to cling or horde but to release and let flow. I confess I’m not perfect, but I am growing.

Warning Sirens

Warning Sirens (CaD Hos 8) Wayfarer

“Put the trumpet to your lips!
    An eagle is over the house of the Lord…”

Living in the midwest means living with the threat of tornados. As a kid, you quickly learn the drill when the tornado sirens go off. I remember the thrill of getting woken up by mother and told to scurry to the basement. In school, we regularly went through tornado drills and told where to go within the school in the event of a tornado.

One of the things that has changed over my lifetime has been the proliferation and advancement of technology that allows one to accurately track a storm front from a smart phone. It’s not unusual for the tornado sirens in our neighborhood to sound when the storm front is relatively far away. It’s not uncommon for us to step outside when the sirens sound to check out the storm that is miles away on the horizon for sight of the tornado that tripped the alarm.

In today’s chapter, Hosea begins by sounding the Emergency Broadcast System of his day. Residents with flocks would graze them outside the city walls during the day. If watchmen on the walls spotted danger such as an approaching army or a bird of prey looking for for an easy meal, they would sound the trumpet, or a ram’s horn, to warn the shepherds to get their flocks safely back within the city walls.

Hosea’s metaphor at the start of his message was intended to get the attention of his audience. He was sounding the alarm. There was danger on the horizon because of their own actions:

They had rejected what was good.
They had forgotten God and His law.
They had chosen their own kings without God’s consent.
They had made idols for themselves, breaking God’s #1 command.
They had put their faith and trust in Assyria’s protection, not God’s.
They gave God the occasional offering, but didn’t place their faith in Him.

Hosea then proclaims that the Hebrews “will return to Egypt,” and what is fascinating about this is that it’s a metaphorical double-edged sword. Before they had become a nation, the Hebrews were in slavery in Egypt, so Hosea’s reference means they will be returning to the slavery and exile from which God originally delivered them. But there is also a literal meaning, as their King would go to Egypt to try and cut a better deal. This betrayal of their alliance with Assyria would start the chain of political events leading to Assyria’s wrath and Israel’s exile.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself thinking about tornado sirens and the prophetic Revelation of John in which seven trumpets sound warnings of events on the horizon, much in the same vein of Hosea in today’s chapter. I can’t help but think of what Jesus said to the descendants of Hosea’s audience: “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.”

Just this last week I read a fascinating article about the “Moral Inversion” being observed in our culture. Right is now wrong. Wrong is now right. Men are women because they say they are. Women are told to be as silent and compliant as a handmaid when a biological male with mediocre ability claims to be a woman and decimates them in competition. Little children who can’t get a tattoo without parental approval until they’re an adult now have the cognitive ability to go through drastic, gender-bending medical procedures (with life-long consequences) and the educational system will both assist in serving the child up to the medical community for profit while keeping parents in the dark. Teenaged girls are suddenly embracing an ideology that would make them the chattel of male oppressors. Heinous violence is celebrated. Hatred has become fashionable. Evil is good.

To Jesus’ point, when the tornado siren sounds, I know to check the radar. I can discern when it’s time to head to the basement and when I can step outside to view the storm clouds on the horizon. I pray I have the discernment to interpret the signs of the times, to cling to what is true and good, and to stand against evil, even in the midst of the storm.

Kings in Heat

“Ephraim is like a dove,

Wendy and I live on the outskirts of our little town with a giant field behind us. As such, we get to enjoy a proximity to wildlife that can be both beautiful and annoying. As we have our morning coffee and smoothies, we often get to enjoy the sight of wild turkeys grazing in our backyard. We’ve heard the eerie sound of coyotes and their kits on the hunt in the evenings. And, the fire bushes we’ve twice planted along our back fence row have struggled to survive because the deer consider them a tasty snack.

Just last week we were driving home late in the evening and came upon a gorgeous eight-point buck. We see does, fawns, and yearlings on a regular basis, but it’s extremely rare for a male to show himself.

The following morning, we were on our way into town and it suddenly became clear why the male had been so bold to show himself. As we were driving, a doe shot across the road about ten yard ahead of us running at full speed and paying no heed to the fact our car was right there. I hit the brakes as the same buck we’d seen the night before lustfully tore after the doe.

“I know what he’s after,” Wendy exclaimed. We giggled and watched as the buck pursued and the doe did her best to evade him through the field on the other side of the road and into the tree line.

In today’s chapter, Hosea uses a stealthy double entendre describing the rulers of ancient Israel. The prophet describes them in culinary terms as “burning like an oven whose fire the baker need not stir.” He writes that they are “inflamed with wine” and “hot as an oven.” Of course, he’s describing the heat of passion. Their base appetites were out-of-control driving lustful behavior unbridled from reason.

It’s helpful to know a little history of ancient Israel to understand Hosea’s message. When the ancient kingdom of Israel split in two, the southern Kingdom of Judah continued to place on their throne direct descendants of King David. The northern Kingdom of Israel, however, had no such loyalties. The throne of Israel was constantly up for grabs to any bully or usurper who had a lust for power and the cunning to pull it off. Ten different dynastic “houses” ruled Israel in less than 300 years. As such, the kings and rulers of Israel tended to be self-centered tryants with a lust for power and wealth. Their children and their administrations were filled with similar ilk. These were not the type of men and women who were spiritually sensitive or possessed hearts of generosity, justice, and the things of God.

Hosea then describes these power-hungry, lust-driven rulers as easily deceived and senseless. They understood the blunt force power of being a local bully and seizing power of a relatively small kingdom, but when it came to the international diplomacy of dealing with empires, the seemingly endless string of usurpers were out of their league.

Hosea says,

“Ephraim is like a dove,
    easily deceived and senseless—
now calling to Egypt,
    now turning to Assyria.”

History records that Hoshea (not to be confused with Hosea), the last king of Israel, had made an alliance with the Assyrian empire. When, however, there was a change of leadership on the Assyrian throne, Hoshea followed his lusts and tried to cut a better deal with Egypt. The betrayal caused Assyria to make an example of disloyal Israel. Assyria attacked, destroyed, and took Israel into exile and captivity. Just as God predicted through Hosea, the heat of Israel’s unbridled appetites would be the achilles heel that would lead to her destruction and exile.

In the quiet this morning, I find myself bringing the national-level lessons of ancient Israel down to personal-level application.

My grandfather used to be fond of saying “I’m king of my castle,” and as I’ve made my way on this earthly journey I recognize the truth of the matter. I am ruler of my own personal kingdom. Just like the kings of Israel, I can rule over my kingdom like a buck in heat following my base appetites for wealth, power, control, and pleasure. I can also rule over my kingdom with love, reason, humility, generosity, and justice. For me, the difference has been the acknowledgement and understanding of who is really on the throne of my personal kingdom. Many years ago, I agreed to submit my own personal kingdom to the Lordship of Jesus and the Kingdom of God. That has made all the difference.
