I woke this morning, cuddled with Wendy, under the blankets. The windows of our bedroom were open and there was a distinct chill in the air. The brisk, cool air is familiar. My body feels the seasons making their gentle yet unstoppable cycle. Each year it comes to this. The summer wanes and the autumn chill creeps through the open bedroom window in the night. And we hurry to get in our fun before the summer ends.
The State Fair is in full swing. School starts in two weeks. The community theatre has its’ annual meeting tonight and a new season will begin. The September and October calendars are beginning to fill with activities. Our final trips to the lake will take place in the coming weekends.
And, it was a busy weekend. Taylor was off to Kansas City with Clayton and his family. Madison was at All-State Vocal Camp. So, Wendy and I were on our own (no surprise there). We went out with our friends Chad and Shay on Friday night. Dinner at Monarch’s was originally going to be followed by a trip to the bowling alley. But, the Pella lanes are shut down following a fire. So, we headed home to play Wii bowling and, it’s likely, we had more fun.
Saturday morning was given to work, but in the afternoon we headed to Des Moines where we hooked up with our friends Dave and Maria. They were in town, from Grand Rapids, visiting Dave’s family. So we met at A.K. O’Connor’s in Beaverdale for a beer. Dave brought his grandmother along and we had a wonderful visit. Grandma Claire is a hoot.
Each August, our friends Kevin and Becky Roose throw a huge bash dubbed Roosepalooza. So, after visiting with Dave and Maria we headed there. It’s a lot of our friends from Westview Church in West Des Moines. Kevin smokes meat all day and Becky makes cheesecake. It’s an entire evening of food, drink, and laughter with really great people. Wendy and I had a hard time tearing ourselves away at 11:00, but we had an hour drive ahead of us and an early morning.
I directed video at church on Sunday morning and we followed with the 9:30 service. The afternoon was spent resting and watching the Olympics. The girls were both home in the evening and we enjoyed catching up with both of them on the events of their trips.
And so, I woke to the chilll this morning. The craziness continues with a full week of work before heading to the lake once more.
