I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Hebrews 5:11-13 (TM)
I wonder what changes we’d see in our culture if we began to set the expectation that everyone must become a teacher. You know, kind of like countries do with mandatory military service. Everyone who sits in the pew must put in their time as a teacher. It wouldn’t have to be in a classroom, it could be mentoring someone, teaching someone their trade so they could earn a living. I don’t think, in our couch potato culture, that we communicate the expectation God clearly places on us. Pastors are afraid to ask too much and congregations bristle at being asked for any commitment.
