Chapter-a-Day Isaiah 51

Critic. "Listen now, you who know right from wrong,
you who hold my teaching inside you:
Pay no attention to insults, and when mocked
don't let it get you down."
Isaiah 51:7 (MSG)

Take a stand, and someone will inevitably crawl into position 180 degrees away.
Speak truth, and voices will always whisper in mockery.
Do the right thing, and those who did nothing will mercilessly critique your performance.

Were it not for individuals who persevered on lonesome paths against long odds in the face of tireless opposition, the world would be a much darker place.

  1. You’ve drunk the cup God handed you,
the strong drink of his anger.
You drank it down to the last drop,
    staggered and collapsed, dead-drunk.
It’s interesting how the Message describes God’s anger in this passage. He compares it to being drunk. The verses following this use strong language to describe the isolation and effects that could be felt by both in the comparison. Sometimes I don’t think we are in tune with God enough to know when He is angry. It makes me think of that stern look I used to get from my dad. The spankings from when I was little moved into only a look which indicated my dad’s disgust or disappointment. Sometimes I feel that look from God. “Really?”, he asks. “That’s the choice you made?” Then he shakes his head and sadly moves on. That disappointment is enough for me to know I was wrong. God help me make good choices to avoid your anger.
