Bringing it Together

Bringing it All Together (CaD Lev 12) Wayfarer

“‘On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised.’
Leviticus 12:3 (NIV)

As we’ve been making our way through this ancient instruction manual for the newly appointed priests of the ancient Hebrew people, I’ve alluded to the fact that God is doing something new with His people. He heard their cries from slavery. He approached Moses and then the people. He delivered them from slavery. And now He is establishing a formal way of daily living in community with them.

But, it didn’t start here.

The relationship between God and the Hebrew people began with Abraham back in the book of Genesis. God called Abraham and made a covenant with him. At the time, God prescribed a physical sign of that covenant which would make Abraham different as I addressed in yesterday’s post/podcast. That physical sign was circumcision, the removal of the foreskin of his penis. This sign was passed on through Abraham’s descendants Isaac, Jacob, Jacob’s sons who became the patriarchs of the twelve Hebrew tribes that God delivered from Egypt, the very people who are now going to live in daily community with the God of their ancestors.

The ritual of circumcision prescribed on the eighth day (remember that the eighth day symbolizes “new things come”) was performed with a knife made of flint rock. What God had done through His covenant with Abraham, He is now codifying as part of what He is doing through the ritual system for the Hebrew people. What “was” is being brought together with what “is.”

Yet, with the Great Story, God is always about “was, and is, and is to come.” (Rev 1:8, 4:8). As humanity matures, the Son of God, Jesus, comes to sacrifice Himself for the sins of the world and rise from the dead. Once again, “new things come.” What had been a physical sign for the ancient Hebrew people is transformed into a spiritual sign for all who are in Christ. Paul explained this to the largely non-Hebrew gathering of Jesus’ followers in Rome:

A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.

It began as a physical sign that would make them different from all other peoples, that all other peoples would see and know there is something different about these people and their God. Jesus transformed into a spiritual sign for all who would believe and receive. A priest with a rock knife cutting off the foreskin of a boy’s penis became Jesus the Great High Priest and the Rock of My Salvation doing spiritual heart surgery, taking away my heart of stone, and giving me a heart of flesh (Ex 36:26).

It’s also interesting to note that many Christian traditions transformed the eighth day ritual of circumcision into the ritual baptism of infants. This was largely built on a connection between the ancient covenant and the new. This is fascinating, as the only ancient covenant spoken of in connection to baptism in the Great Story is a covenant even older than the covenant of Abraham, the covenant of Noah (1 Peter 3:20).

So in the quiet this morning, I am once more blown away at how God perpetually connects all things together even as He perpetually recreates, with old things passing away and new things coming. Along my spiritual journey, this has developed within me a continuous spiritual posture:

Appreciation for what was.
Discernment for what is.
Expectation for what will be.

Demonizing: Then and Now

Demonization: Then and Now (CaD Job 18) Wayfarer

“The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out;

I can’t help but shake my head in fascination at the times in which we are living in , especially as it relates to the polarization of politics and media. Both sides of the political spectrum are pursuing legal means to prove their opposition’s top candidate of corruption while being selectively dismissive of the accusations against their party’s candidate with a repeated refrain pointing to the opposition saying “Well, what about…”

I am reminded of a t-shirt that keeps popping up in my social media feed. It says, “Study History: Realize that People Have Been this Stupid for Thousands of Years!”

Did you know that the 1824 Presidential election between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson ended up being decided by Congress because no candidate secured enough electoral votes? The Speaker of the House was Henry Clay, who had also run for President that year. In a back room deal, Clay secured the White House for Adams in exchange for Adams appointing Clay to one of Adams’ secretary positions. Four years later, the rematch between Adams and Jackson got nasty, with Adams’ supporters accusing General Jackson of murdering six of his own militia men and accusing his wife of adultery. Jackson’s supporters accused Adams of using public money for personal purchases, gambling inside the White House, and hiring prostitutes to create political leverage when he was ambassador to Russia.

The demonization and scapegoating of others, especially those who are different or with whom we disagree, has long been a very human enterprise. It starts on the playground, continues in school, in community social circles, in religious circles, and in politics.

In today’s chapter, Job’s friend Bill pipes up in the conversation once again, but the gloves have come off. Bill recites a Hebrew wisdom poem that describes “a wicked man.” The poem is filled with descriptions that point directly to Job’s circumstances. Here are a few of the more blatant ones (I’ve changed personal pronouns with [the wicked man] for effect):

“The vigor of [the wicked man’s] step is weakened.” Job’s illness has left him weak and emaciated.

“Terrors startle [the wicked man] on every side.” Job has complained of the terrors and nightmares that have plagued him at night.

“Calamity is hungry for [the wicked man].” In one day, Job had all of his flocks stolen and all of his children died in a storm.

“It eats away [the wicked man’s] skin.” Job’s body is covered in festering sores.

“[The wicked man] is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.” With his flocks stolen and children dead, Job is left with no financial security and any prospect for a future are non-existent.

“The memory of [the wicked man] perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land.” With Job’s children dead, he will have no descendants to remember him or leave any kind of legacy.

Bill’s accusation is clear: Job is obviously a wicked man.

In the quiet this morning, I am amazed at Bill’s callous poem. The culture of his day held firmly that tragedy and suffering were a sure sign of God’s wrath, and that tragedies and suffering must point to the wickedness of the person suffering from them. For 18 chapters Job has been questioning this premise. The more he does so, the more entrenched his three friends become in their position. The more entrenched his friends become in their position, the more Job becomes entrenched in his. Again, it’s kind of like what I see happening in our culture in which we demonize those who think and believe differently. The more I demonize, the more justified I feel in doing so.

History has revealed to me that this is not a particularly healthy pattern.

My mind, as always, wanders back to the teachings and example of Jesus, who quite regularly humanized and treated with kindness those whom His own culture demonized. This includes who were ethnically different (Samaritans), those who were culturally marginalized (women), those who were religiously demonized (woman caught in adultery), and those who were politically demonized (Romans). The only ones you can arguably say that Jesus demonized were the religious fundamentalists of His own tribe who perpetuated the demonization of all of the others I named. But that’s a stretch. Jesus regularly dined with the religious leaders, was a guest in their homes, and welcomed them into conversation. While His words against their corporate actions was particularly harsh, His interpersonal relationship with them as individuals was kind and gentle.

And so, I end this week committed to personally follow Jesus example, refusing to demonize others. In particular, I want to humanize and treat with gentle and loving-kindness those whom my tribe(s) tend to demonize, even if they demonize me. I find Jesus’ words, beautifully paraphrased by scholar Eugene Peterson, an apt contrast to Bill’s poetic attack on Job:

“You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the supple moves of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.

“In a word, what I’m saying is, Grow up. You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.”

A Different Way

Over the last year, I found myself subscribing to several accounts on social media that regularly publish posts and memes about what it was like growing up in the 70s and 80s. It’s brought back a lot of memories:

As much as these bring back fond memories, they also remind me of just how much life has significantly changed in just one generation. Just as I could never fully fathom what my grandparents’ lives were like living through two World Wars and the Great Depression, my grandchildren will never fully fathom life without access to more information in their hands than was available to me on the entire planet.

As technology, data, processing speed, and computer memory continue to advance at an ever increasing pace, I’ve observed what appears to be an increasing lack of empathy and/or appreciation for the past. What I witness is that Cancel Culture isn’t just about socially ostracizing people who don’t toe an ideological line, but I also see people dismissing the past as being as outdated and worthless as that second-generation iPod gathering dust in a drawer somewhere.

Today’s chapter introduces us to the brutal life that was daily human existence 3500 years ago and in the early chapters of the Great Story. The Hebrew conquest of Canaan is layered with meaning that contains implications and themes that foreshadow the larger themes of grace, judgment, and redemption that are present in the larger story. Yet, it is easy to dismiss for modern readers who are used to simply canceling anything that doesn’t comfortably fit in my 21st century, politically correct worldview.

War and conquest were the dominant way of life. City-States and regions were continually embroiled in surviving those armies, nations, and fledgling empires bent on growing their power. But what happened at Jericho is actually different in many regards. God makes it clear that it is He who is passing judgment on the people of Jericho, it is God who is out front making victory miraculously possible, and it is God who was gracious with Rahab and her family, who by faith, believed that the God was the one true God. The Hebrew people were not allowed to take spoil from the battle. Archaeological evidence at Jericho found entire jars full of grain that had been left which makes little sense in a world in which famine regularly wiped out entire people groups. There’s something different taking place. For forty years God has been doing something different with these Hebrew tribes than the world has ever seen.

And, if I can’t fully fathom what life was like for my grandparents in the Great Depression, then I certainly can’t fully fathom what life was like for those Hebrew tribes at Jericho. Personally, I don’t take that as a license to ignore and judge either the Hebrews or God, but rather as an invitation to be gracious in my ignorance while also wrapping my head and heart around the larger Story being told that I might continue to gain wisdom in my own journey and where this Great Story is leading.

In the quiet this morning, I can’t shake the fact that it is God who is driving the action, God who is leading the charge, God who is just beginning to reveal Himself to humanity by telling His people “I’m going to show you a different way of doing things.” Which is the same thing that Jesus did when He revealed that Messiah was not about earthly power and kingdoms, but about a suffering servant compelled by love to sacrificially lay down His life for others.

Which reminds me that on this day, even with my phone in my hand which has more computing power than the Apollo mission had sending men to the moon, and access to an infinite number of distractions of any kind I could possibly want, I believe that Jesus is still trying to get my attention, to hold my focus long enough to get through to me: “Tom, I’m trying to show you a different way of doing things. A different way than you see all the kingdoms and power structures of this world doing with them amidst all the technology and knowledge they have. Follow me.”

A Different Kind of Kingdom

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!

Over the past few years, my local gathering of Jesus’ followers has been focused on the phrase Jesus taught his disciples to pray: “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Over a three year cycle, we have contemplated the meaning of God’s kingdom within each of us, God’s kingdom in our community with others, and God’s Kingdom as we are sent to interact with the world around us.

In my own personal contemplation, I’ve found myself meditating on the fact that God’s kingdom operates opposite of the world I live in.

The world I live in encourages me to acquire more and more, while Jesus said that if I really want to be rich in God’s economy I should practice radical generosity.

The world I live in encourages me to hate my enemies, be suspicious of those who are not like me, and fight against those who have a different worldview than mine. Jesus said that in God’s kingdom I am not to repay evil for evil, but bless those who curse me.

The world I live in encourages equitable pay for equitable work. Jesus said that if I want to be part of God’s Kingdom, I have to be willing to walk further than what’s expected, to give more than has been asked, and to be content if and when I see others who seemingly have it better off than me.

The world I live in worships and rewards audacity, wealth, celebrity, and ego.

The prophet Zechariah lived and proclaimed his prophecies during the period known as the Babylonian exile. Babylon had destroyed Jerusalem and torn Solomon’s Temple into ruins. Seventy years later, Zech’s messages and prophecies concerned the rebuilding of Jerusalem and God’s promises of restoration.

In today’s chapter, Zechariah prophetically envisions the “coming king” arriving in a rebuilt Jerusalem, not with the pomp of a royal parade, but humbly riding on a donkey. And, that’s just what Jesus did. Jesus’ followers thought that Jesus was going to wipe out the Romans, give the corrupt religious leaders their just desserts, and set up an earthly kingdom in which they would have positions of worldly prominence. Instead, Jesus suffered cruelly and died violently at the hands of His enemies. After rising from the dead, Jesus reminded His followers of what He’d been telling them all along: They would experience the same fate.

In the quiet this morning I find myself meditating on the economics of God’s Kingdom, which is so opposite the way my world operates. It’s so different than the way I’ve been taught to operate in this world. The media has already trended a million different ways since two weeks ago, but I can’t help but think about Brandt Jean forgiving his brother’s killer in public, then going the extra mile to ask the judge if he can give her a hug.

At that moment Brandt Jean brought God’s kingdom to earth as it is in heaven. He gets it.

God, as I enter this new day, help me to do the same.
