“I’m Batman”

Last week I was driving home from meetings in Des Moines and called Wendy. She told me that she and Suzanna had been chasing a bat around the house. They didn’t know if it had flown out the door Wendy had opened for it or if it was still stuck in the house hiding somewhere. I got home and there had still been no sign of the bat, so Wendy hoped it had found its way out of the house.

Before supper, I decided to make a cursory inspection of the living room drapes and spied the winged rodent hanging behind the curtain in the far corner. He appeared to be fast asleep so I told Wendy not to worry about it for the moment. Dinner was ready so I figured we’d eat first and deal with the bat after.

After dinner the three of us headed into the living room to deal with our winged intruder. We opened the front door to give him a way of escape. Suzanna stood in the doorway to the dining room with a broom. Wendy stood in front of the hall entrance with a blanket. I grabbed a tennis racket and proceeded to prod and poke at the curtain but the bat wouldn’t budge from his perch. Wendy suggested that I pick up the curtain rod and just carry it outside. I pulled the rod off the hook and that startled the bat who flew and flopped onto the floor behind the end table.

The little guy must have been tired and scared half to death because when I placed my tennis racket down to get it underneath him he just slowly climbed up onto it like I was extending a stretcher for him to climb onto. I carried him out and threw him up in the air and he flew away.

I had to head to auditions so I went into the bedroom and threw on a t-shirt. When I walked out into the dining room to gather my stuff, Suzanna let out a loud guffaw and continued to laugh. Without thinking about it, I had grabbed and thrown on my Batman t-shirt.

The following afternoon, Suzanna presented me with a picture she drew to honor the occasion 🙂

  1. This made me laugh out loud this morning! Love it! Thanks for taking the time to write this funny story. I can picture it all in my mind!! And way to go Susanna!! Great pic!

  2. Love it. Bats are wonderful creatures. I had to catch one in my son and daughter-in-law’s bathroom earlier this year. Nothing would convince it to leave so in the end I managed to catch it with a fishing net and release it. Unfortunately I do not have a batman teeshirt.

    1. I know that bats are good for the environment and they are an endangered species, but I must admit I have been slow to consider them “wonderful creatures.” In fact, they pretty much freak me out. We have had to deal with them fairly regularly in my old house, so I’ve gotten somewhat used to them. Nevertheless, the little critters tend to give me the heebie-jeebies. But, I’m trying to learn to appreciate them. Catching and releasing is a good first step!

      1. My wife and daughter-in-law would agree with you! Years ago my wife picked up a baby bat when she saw what she thought was a piece of paper on the kitchen floor. She managed enough courage to pick it up again after dropping it when it made a noise, then put it on a tree in the garden. When I came home it was still there so I moved it to a wall and sat in the car to watch what it would do. I was amazed to see a parent bat come and collect its offspring within a couple of minutes. The parent attached itself to the wall, the baby climbed onto the parent and off they flew. Bats are protected in the UK so if they get into the roof space of your home there is very little you can do about it.
