And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out. Matthew 19:18 (TM)
"How would Jesus change your name?" my friend asked as we shuffled through Jerusalem. We had just left the traditional site of the "upper room" where the disciple John, who had been known as one of the angry "Sons of Thunder," was suddenly introduced as "the disciple Jesus loved."
"Jesus changed Simon to Peter. Saul became Paul." my friend reminded me. "What new name would Jesus give you?"
We continued to walk in the court outside the upper room site. The sun beat down upon us as I considered the question. Walking in relationship with Jesus is a transforming experience. How had God transformed me? What passion and calling had He given me? If Peter became the rock of leadership and John became focused on love, then what would others see as God at work in me? It didn’t take me too long to arrive at the answer. Theatre, art, music and all things creative is where Jesus enflamed my passions.
I turned to our Jewish guide, Devora.
"What is the Hebrew word for ‘Creator’?" I asked her.
"Barre’" she told me.
"Ben Barre’, ‘Child of the Creator’ would be the name," I answered my friend.
What about you? How has Jesus transformed you? What "new" moniker would he give you?
