The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood. John 1:14a (TM)
Sometimes there is so much meaning behind a simple sentence.
For us, the idea of Jesus becoming flesh and moving into our neighborhood is a concept. We wonder what that would be like. We contemplate how the flesh-and-blood Jesus would relate to us, to the cranky neighbor a couple of houses over or the skater-boys in the driveway across the street. What would he say to me? What would he say to them? What would he do?
For John, this wasn’t a concept. It wasn’t a mental exercise. The flesh-and-blood Jesus DID move into his neighborhood. He DID have a relationship with the cranky neighbor, the town crazy, the kids in the neighborhood, his fishing buddies, the tax-man and the local pastor. The gospel of John was not written as religious literature but as a memoir. This is first-hand testimony of the only one of Jesus’ disciples who stood physically at the foot of the cross and at the empty tomb.
