A Worthwhile Spiritual Exercise

Long Road

If the Lord had not been on our side….
Psalm 124:1a (NIV)

The lyrics of David’s psalm this morning are straight and to the point. Had it not been for God, he sings, he and his people would have been swallowed up by their enemies. Suddenly as I read the lyrics this morning I thought of all the ways my life’s path and destination would be different “If the Lord had not been on my side.”

If the Lord had not been on my side:

  • I would have given myself over to dark impulses a long time ago
  • I don’t believe I would have found my way out of dark places
  • I would be buried in and paralyzed by crippling shame
  • I would be a far worse arrogant jerk than I am
  • I would be nowhere near the waypoint in life I find myself
  • I would likely have never met Wendy
  • Wendy and I might not have survived a few of those years
  • As David sings: “The raging waters would have swept us away”

What a worthwhile mental and spiritual exercise to start my day, which leads me to a similar conclusion as it did David in his song.

Thanks, God. I am both humble and grateful.

Chapter-a-Day Proverbs 2

Search for them as you would for silver;
seek them like hidden treasures. Proverbs 2:4 (NLT)

It is just after the New Year as I write this. The television news programs are running their annual stories about getting organized and setting goals. The commercials are all about weight loss. The newspapers (those that are left) are running articles once again about setting resolutions and how to keep them.

What are you going to do this year?
What positive changes are you going to make?
How are you going to achieve your goals?

I’ve never been big on new year’s resolutions, but as I read the chapter today I’m reminded that even God’s Message calls us to make choices, to look to the horizon and set the way-point of where we’re headed, and to determine what we will seek after. Jesus told us that whatever we seek after we will find.

So what am I seeking after? What is it I’m driving towards? Proverbs urges me this morning to seek after wisdom, insight, and understanding as if it was buried treasure. Is that what I’ve been searching out? Does that describe my heart’s desire?

Today is a good day to do a little soul searching. This is a good time to adjust the GPS and recalibrate my position. Set the waypoint for wisdom. Chart a course for understanding. Search for insight on the horizon. Hoist the sails.

We’re going on a treasure hunt.

Day 21: Something You Can’t Seem to Get Over

30 Day Blogging Challenge Day 21: Something you can’t seem to get over.

I’ve come to learn that there are some events in life that you never truly “get over,” nor do I believe you should. They become a part of your journey. Some events, whether positive or negative, become a waypoint; they are a demarkation point of your life. They were a factor in determining your course, they become a part of your story, and a part of who you are.

When I was going through divorce I had a dear friend who’d been there before tell me that the day her divorce was official “was the worst day and the best day of my life.” I’ve never forgotten the words and have learned the truth of them. Friday, May 13, 2005 was a huge waypoint in the journey from which the course is forever altered. There are feelings of sorrow and pangs of failure that are forever attached to the event. And, yet, God is a God of resurrection and redemption specializing in creating new life out of things which have withered and died. I look at the present abundance of life and joy I daily experience and marvel at how the Creator never ceases His artistic pursuits of using broken, dead things to create new expressions of life.

Resurrection comes with the prerequisite of death. There’s no getting over it.
